What is the Cadiz Open Water Swimming Development Trust?
The Cadiz Open Water Swimming Development Trust identifies disadvantaged swimmers and swimming programmes and provides sustainable support in an attempt to nurture and promote new talent and to help bring swimming to disadvantaged communities.
Mission
- To provide sustainable financial and other support for relevant, disadvantaged swim initiatives.
- To provide sustainable support for talented swimmers who have little or no support.
- To promote swimming, in particular open water swimming, at grassroots level and to bring more disadvantaged talent into the “system”.
- To commence in the Western Cape, but to spread nationally.
- To bolster representative participation in the Cadiz Swim Series and Cadiz Freedom Swim
Objectives
Through this Trust, we intend to:
- Promote swimming as a healthy alternative among disadvantaged communities where drownings are a frequent reality. About 70% of South Africans are not proficient swimmers and drowning accounts for the second highest cause of accidental death amongst children under 15. In SA, around 1500 people drown each year.
- Help bring new talent through the system and into competitive open water swimming.
- Help create new role models and sporting heroes and invest in the country’s talented youth.
- Provide sustainable and credible coaching and development programmes.
