Cadiz Freedom Swim 2012 cancelled

Dear Swimmers

As you are all aware the Cadiz Freedom Swim which is run for the benefit of Vista Nova School has grown significantly over the years into one of the greatest extreme ocean swim races of its kind in the world.

The event’s success has been underpinned by an extensive logistical and organisational operation to ensure the highest safety standards necessary for an extreme event of this nature. This requires considerable financial investment which is funded by various sponsors as well as participants’ entry fees.The growth of the swim over the years has also led us to rethink the swim format to allow for improved safety and to consider the impact on the environment.

This year, due to the prevailing adverse economic climate and despite the best efforts of all concerned, it has not been possible to raise sufficient funds to ensure the high organisational and safety standards required to host this extreme ocean swim in its current format.

Consequently, after much deliberation, it has been decided to cancel the 2012 swim while a new operational model is sought for the event going forward.

Cadiz, as the title sponsor, has undertaken to honour its financial commitment to Vista Nova School, the beneficiary of the event.

Ram Barkai, a respected personality in the international swimming community will, in his individual capacity, be driving the future model of the event together with the key role players who have been integral to the event’s growth over the years.

It is always disappointing to forgo a swim for which one has trained so hard. The intention is to continue to develop and build excitement around the future of  swimming events and to make South Africa home to some of the most extreme swims around the world, so don’t give up your training.

Swimmers who have already entered and paid their entry fees for their participation in 2012 will be re-imbursed and will be contacted by the event organisers in this regard.
